Khamzat Khizarovich Chimaev was born on May 1, 1994, in Chechnya, Russia. He started wrestling when he was 5 years old and won a bronze medal at the Russian National Championships at the junior level. In 2013, Chimaev moved to Sweden with his mother and lived with his brother.

Chimaev continued his wrestling career by winning two gold medals in Sweden one in 2017 and the other in 2018. At 23 years old he started training MMA along with three-time UFC Light Heavyweight Championship challengers Alexander Gustafsson, Ilir Latifi, and Reza Madadi among others.
Before becoming a professional fighter Chimaev worked as a security agent at a poultry factory in Kalmar.
